OK, even a cinephile has to admit it: I love

|

I'm a sucker for a good story with sophisticated characters, set against richly textured historical backdrops that span cultural and class divisions (that's why I'm working on Femopolis).
It's a refreshing tonic to all the pop culture I constantly absorb. Much like how a finely prepared and presented meal would provide a break from a diet of drive-thru fast food.
The BBC has been on a roll with its new, top-quality period dramas.
Among the best are:
The Way We Live Now
Tipping the Velvet
Wives and Daughters
and most recently
Bleak House
Interestingly, the above series were all adapted for television by Andrew Davies, so look for that name when watching these period dramas. He once remarked:
"People ask me why I keep doing these 19th-century novels, and the reason is that they are just better than a lot of 20th-century work. They are great stories with terrific three-dimensional characters who belong to the real world." |

Is I, Claudius the greatest TV series of all time?
You might not believe it if you haven't seen this masterpiece. Those who have seen it are hard pressed to name a show that tops it!
If you rent or buy this on video, make sure you're getting the uncut British version (complete with naked boobies!). |

Is Deadwood the second best television series ever made? |
I grew up on SF TV. Here are the top ten shows of my youth:
STAR TREK
BATMAN
UFO
SEARCH
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE
GREEN HORNET
CAPTAIN SCARLET
THUNDERBIRDS
RAT PATROL
DOCTOR WHO
|

Never heard of SEARCH?
That's OK, few have!

Gene Roddenberry repeatedly described Star Trek as "Hornblower in space." Recently the A&E cable channel has been producing miniseries based on the HORNBLOWER novels by C.S. Forester. Even if you're not a Trek fan, WATCH THIS SERIES! |
