The 1865 Steam Man The 1872 Steam Man Mark II The 1876 Steam Man Mark III
After Frank Reade Jr. assembled his improved version of his father's Steam Man, he turned to producing a mechanical man that would be powered by electricity. The result was the Electric Man, shown above and at right, during a trial run. In 1886, Reade Jr. traveled with this metal giant on a world tour similar to Archibald Campion's journey with Boilerplate.
Reade Jr.'s success with his mechanical man encouraged him to construct the Electric Horse, shown below harnessed to its power source, an electric carriage. The Electric Horse was actually inspired by the Steam Horse. In the illustration below, Frank Jr., wearing an alloy chainmail of his own design, prepares to do battle with bandits posing as Indians.
