The adventures of a renegade crew and the ship they call home.

The captain is a veteran of a great war, a skilled leader but full of contradictions. He is constantly fighting his demons.

The second-in-command is a wartime friend of the Captain, who demonstrates an almost unconditional loyalty to him.

The ship's pilot is light-hearted and tends to make amusing comments, despite the severity of any situation.

The engineer is a young girl who has no formal training, but keeps the ship running with an intuitive gift for mechanical equipment.

Much of the crew's work consists of cargo runs or smuggling. They make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of space. These outlying planets and moons, where the series takes place, resemble the American West.

They have relative governmental freedom, but lack the amenities of the high-tech civilization that exists on the inner worlds. These settlements did not receive much support after terraforming. This resulted in many of the border planets and moons having forbidding, dry environments.
