In the first of these unlettered preview pages, Aztec generals get word that Spaniards have arrived in Mexico and are looking for Spanish castaways from eight years ago.
One of the two Spanish castaways tries to convince the other to return with him. The other Spaniard refuses, and his wife shows her disdain for the attempt to steal her husband away.
The Spanish castaway misses his rendezvous at Cozumel with Cortés’ fleet by one day. He has been marooned for eight years.
Meanwhile, one of the ships in the fleet signals distress. The fleet is forced to return to Cozumel for repairs.
The castaway learns of the fleet’s return and seeks them out. The conquistadors are pleasantly surprised to see him. The castaway is overwhelmed by rejoining his countrymen after almost a decade.
Cortés: “Where is this Spaniard?”
Castaway: “I am he.”
Now the conquistadors have a translator. The success of their mission to find the mysterious Aztecs, rumored to be rich in gold, seems assured...
